TE Dominic A. Aquila Elected Moderator of 34th PCA General Assembly

Atlanta – The 34th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America, meeting in Atlanta, Ga., held its opening worship service on Tuesday, June 20. The retiring moderator, Howard Q. Davis, an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Indianola, Miss., gave the opening sermon before an audience of over 2,000.

Mr. Davis spoke on the theme Mr. Davis spoke on the theme "Onward Christian Soldiers" from Ephesians 6:10-20. He stated that one way to look at the whole Bible is as a story of a war that started before the foundation of the world and will last until Christ returns. From the text he pointed to Paul's admonition to put on the whole armor of God. This is an important urging because "the church has not put on the armor and has allowed itself to become rusted and in disrepair."

Paul made it clear that the church must engage in this spiritual warfare, that Satan is the real enemy, and so the church is commanded to stand fast. Mr. Davis called the church to put on the armor of God with prayer: "The church and its members are no longer prayer warriors, and without prayer the army is in trouble." Another way to engage in this warfare is "to examine and train our leaders and those in the pews, and then we need to take the gospel into all the world, making disciples of all nations." He concluded with the exhortation: "Christ is our leader and the only real hero of this war; we need to honor and obey him."
